17th century
George Brown was Parish schoolmaster at
least between 1670-1700. On 19 June 1702, his widow, Agnes Clark, was
paid 8 pounds scots (representing his salary for 1700) by John Johnston tenant
of Whitsome Newton as the representative of Sir James Don, one of the
heritors of the Parish.
18th century
William Tunter was schoolmaster in Whitsome at least between 1723-1732 when
he signed a petition, and then had 4 children baptised. It's probable that
he was in the position for much longer than that. One of his sons had his
son baptised in the village in 1771.
An unnamed teacher was in position 1766-1781. From the OPR, it appears that
his name was Wilson,
and his forename may have been George.
