6: The Red Row was a group of houses, long since demolished, near the
church at the west end of the village. This postcard seems to be from the
same series as that of the Post Office and the first of the photos on the
previous page.
According to the 1901 census, 3 households, all including
quarry labourers, lived here. If my estimate of 1901-ish for the picture is
correct, the only girl that age living there was Nellie Russell, and the
baby would be her brother James. The man could be any of four adult
male Red Row residents at that time - James Russell (age 61), Thomas
Russell (32), Thomas Ballantyne (38), James Stenhouse (40).
If it's a little later, the girl could be Elizabeth Ballantyne (born 1900).
