Views of  Whitsome from the west 1

In the last 19th and early 20th century, artists and photographers would travel the country, making drawings and watercolours or taking pictures of towns, villages and businesses. Many of these pictures were turned into postcards, many of which survive today. Thus far, the only pictures I've seen have been of Whitsome village, but I'm still hoping that somewhere along the line, somebody visited Hilton or the farms and that their work will turn up.
Some of the pictures shown in these sections are my own, others have been sent by Whitsome descendants to whom I'm grateful. In other sections, I've included the names of the owners of family photographs, but I haven't done this for the postcards as they almost all came from more than one source.
Where I can, I've given an approximate date, together with my reasons, but remember that dating such pictures is a fuzzy business!

1: This image seems to have "1894" after the artist's name, making it the earliest of the postcard collection. However, there's an older photograph in the Community section. Comparison with the pictures below suggests that the low cottages on the right, nearest the artist were substantially rebuilt after this drawing was made.

2: There's no real evidence for the date of the image on the right, except that it's possibly the same series as the one showing the Post Office in the Community section, which would make it around 1901.

Below is a detail from a hand-coloured version of the same photograph. This postcard is postmarked 1906. It's always interesting to see how many people are lurking in the background of these photos.
