The school cleaner
On 12 the December 1902, the duties of the school cleaner were laid down as follows:

1: Sweep the school at night
2: Dust the school at night
3: Wash the floors and lobbies monthly, and the woodwork when necessary
4: Clean the grates, set and kindle the fires, carry in the coal
5: Attend to lamps, trimming, cleaning, filling and lighting them as required
6: Clean the windows monthly
7: Clean the porches and doorsteps
8: Clean the wash hand basins
9: Rearrange the desks after entertainment held in the school
10: Clean the water closets [toilets]
11: Ink wells and mops
12: Attend to all other duties required in the cleaning of the premises.

For all of this, the cleaner was paid £4 10/- for the summer half year, and £5 10/- for the winter months. A month's notice was to be given before leaving.

In June 1907, Mrs Russell was about to be dismissed as cleaner, but instead they relieved her of cleaning the water closets and reduced her salary to £3 in the summer and £3 10/- in the winter. Thomas Ballantyne was appointed to clean the toilets on an annual salary of £3 10/-. His duties were:

1: Thoroughly flush the water closets not less than twice a week.
2: Whitwash the waterclosets and walls twice a year
3: Keep all clean and tidy.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Supplies
11 December 1908. Until now, the headmadter has supplied ink, pens, pen points and blotting paper to the pupils, at a charge of between 9d - 1/-. From now on, this will be supplied by the school board.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Discipline
On 8 December 1905 Mr Brown complained to the Whitsome School Board that senior boys were being employer as beaters on the Blackadder Estate on School days, badly affecting attendance. The Board agreed to write to Sir George Houston.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Equipment
At the insistence of the Inspectors, a barometer, a thermometer and Ordinance Survey maps were bought for the school in December 1907.
A piano was also bought.
