The 6 photos on this and the following page show the school at the
very start of the 20th century. They have been dated from the ages of the known
children, the dates should therefore be seen as "best guess" (eg
was it the autumn start of a class, or the end of that class the following
summer?). At this time, the Headmaster of the school was Alexander Brown
(1874-1944). His wife, Johan MacKay (1872-1926) was also a teacher, and
played the organ for the Church. Some time after 1912, Alexander Brown
moved to Chirnside
School where he
remained until he retired.
The female teachers in the photos have been provisionally identified by
combining the ages of the identified children in the various photos with
the notes of the Parochial School Board.
1: Miss Halliday
2: Mary Kinghorn
3: Jessie Hamilton Kerr?
4: Christina Hosick
5: Jessie Tweedie (if it's 1911, unknown if it's 1912)
Whitsome regularly advertised for female teachers so they must have changed
frequently.
