This page presents a transcription of the Cess Roll from 1817--part of the difficulty of tracking who owned which piece of land can be seen by the terminology used - pieces of land are known by the names of owners or former owners, and not by their names, despite the fact that it's obvious from the map collection at the National Library that at least some of the names were in use as far back at the 17th century.

Since the multiple holdings of some landowners are shown together, it is not clear why others are shown as separate entries (eg Thomas Boswall). It is, of course, possible that 3 people of the same name held the different properties, but the records do not support this.

Land owners & occupiers from the Cess Roll for the parish of Whitsome & Hilton of 1817.
(spelling and terminology exactly as given on the original)
"Heritors" were the landowners who were responsible for the parish church, parish school, the poor and payment of the schoolteacher's salary and the Minister's stipend; Cess was the land tax; Tiend is the old word for tythe.
