The Taits were obviously prosperous - by the middle of the 19th century, they also owned the much larger farm of East Newton and a legal firm in Kelso. The current owner, George, also attracted praise from the Rev Adam Landells, Minister of the Parish and author of the 2nd Statistical Account for his innovation in draining a small field and then sowing it with barley rather than leaving it fallow as the traditional rotation required. The yield was described as "above average". That they were well-thought of in the Parish is also shown by the frequency that the various Tait men appear as witnesses to baptisms in both the 18th and 19th centuries.
