The Farms--Dykegatehead

Also known as Dykethead and Dykelhead at different times.

Dykegatehead farm has been existence since the 17th century, at least. It is not shown on the 1645 Blaeu map of Berwickshire, but other farms known to have existed before 1645 are also missing, so that proves little or nothing. It lies in the NE part of the parish, in the area included in the ancient parish of Hilton

Ownership.
The Dykegatehead lands were part of the Blackadder Estate. Until the death of Robert Blackadder at Flodden in 1513, the Estate had belonged to the family of that name. After Robert's death, his two daughters married (some reports claim forcibly) into the Home family. It seems to have continued in the possession of the Homes of Blackadder until its sale to Sir Alexander Boswall in the second half of the 18th century. After the death of Sir George R. Houston Boswall, the estate was sold to William A. Towler. By 1926, Dykegatehead  was owned by the resident farmer, Gordon Adam, who owned the farm until at least 1937.
