Primary Scottish Sources Scotland's People  The place for birth, marriage and death certificates, plus the census from 1901 back, the Parochial Registers of the Church of Scotland and testaments (formerly on Scottish Documents). The National Archives of Scotland  A goldmine of documents--some non-conformist registers, sasines, Minutes of Church Sessions, all sorts of things. Their catalogue is gradually coming on line. National Library of Scotland  Apart from the books, a wonderful collection of maps. The Statistical Accounts Reports written by the Ministers about their parishes at the end of the 18th and the middle of the 19th centuries. Scottish Records Society Scottish Archive Network GENUKI The central web page for UK genealogy in general, with a wealth of information about what is available where…. Scots Origins  If you only want the information, this can prove a cheaper option than buying certificates. Scottish Ministers presents the first 2 volumes of Fasti Ecclesiae Scoticanae, the biographies of the Ministers of the Church of Scotland.

Societies These are the Society pages I've found useful, largely because they correspond with my fields of interest. You'll find the ones for the other areas of Scotland on the respective county pages on GENUKI. Most of them now have their own bookshops--some on-line, others by mail order. All are worth looking at. Mapping Old maps  19th century, first edition, OS maps Multimap  Modern mapping--if you have no idea at all where a place is, this is a good place to start, before searching the older maps. The National Library Map Collection

Other sources LDS Family Search This site must be used with a degree of caution, but can prove very useful for preliminary searches. Part of the site includes the International Genealogical Index (IGI) which is a mixture of records extracted from original registers (especially those of the Church of Scotland) and records submitted by LDS Church members and other users. While much of the latter is probably very well researched, it is clear that some is based on a certain degree of wishful thinking and family legend, and it is essential to check the source of information found.
