Centre of Excellence for Product & Automotive Design details

In 2005 Coventry University's School of Art and Design was awarded over £2.5 million to develop the prestigious national Centre for Excellence for Product and Automotive Design (CEPAD). The School was selected for the award as a result of its innovative work and international reputation in transport and product design; in particular an excellent design learning experience for students which has helped them develop a close empathy with the global industrial design community and experts in the design industries. This learning experience is underpinned by an approach to teaching and learning that is industry informed and supported by design academics who have significant industrial and professional experience.

The additional funding provides opportunities which reinforces and enhances our success, primarily through a research-based approach closely aligned with our teaching and learning strategy. Our aim is to disseminate our achievements, lessons learned and new innovations both within the University and across the sector, and regular highlights will appear on the CEPAD website.

Role in EADIS

Coventry University will co-ordinate the delivery and administration aspect of this project from the beginning to ensure that the project timescales are adhered to and targets are met. The University will put in place the management structure to enable trans-national partners to effectively share information and report on progress, threats and issues.

Oulu University of Applied Sciences. www.oamk.fi (formerly known as Oulu Polytechnic), one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Finland with approximately 8,000 students, operates in one of the fastest growing areas of the country – the Oulu region. The university has 30 degree programmes of which 10 are in the school of engineering. Information Technology and Telecommunications department is focused on mobile technology and wireless communication systems. Together with Medical Engineering and Vehicle and Transportation Engineering departments Oulu University of Applied Sciences is able to give a significant contribution to this project.

Role in EADIS

In terms of our specific role within EADIS, Oulu University of Applied Sciences will:

  • Work with partners to develop the Digital Innovation Studio (DIS) environment
  • Provide employees to test the DIS and curriculum
  • Provide access to our networks and partnerships in order to disseminate the findings of the project

Fachhochschule Münster – www.fh-muenster.de
(Munster University of Applied Sciences, MUAS), is Germany's most successful University of Applied Sciences with respect to R&D. 10.000 people - academics, staff and students - are jointly looking for new ways and exact solutions in various fields of competence.

The laboratory for Software Engineering at MUAS (Laboratory webpage) can offer substantial R&D experience in fields like Mobile Computing, Location Based Services, Object-oriented Analysis and Distributed Software Architectures. We exhibit industrial experience for several years in IT Consulting, especially Software Development, Requirements Engineering and IT Project Management. The lab is specialized in Mobile Assistance Systems, i.e. the design and construction of innovative software products on small devices like e.g. mobile phones or personal digital assistants. We developed the information system "moFahr" for regional bus traffic on mobile phones, which is now a widely used service for traffic participants in the German region of Westphalia. Works in progress are "NAVIKI", a wiki and GPS based system for off-road navigation, as well as an information system for airport arrivals and departures.

We understand ourselves as a solution partner for industries, institutions and academia in connection with the development of client-specific application software.

Role in EADIS

Within the EADIS project, Fachhochschule Münster will assist with the development of the Digital Innovation Studio and will promote and recruit to the project within Germany.

Politecnico Di Torino, www.polito.it
is a leader in Italy and in Europe in the field of technical-scientific training, in Engineering and Architectural research. The Politecnico di Torino offers excellence in technology and acknowledges its historical context. It promotes the ability to carry out theoretical or applied research, and also the capacity to achieve concrete and reliable productive processes or organise services and facilities. Attention is paid to practicality without forgetting design, and striving for quality while keeping costs under control. At the Politecnico, today's needs are analysed to design a sustainable tomorrow. By the end of his or her degree, a Politecnico di Torino graduate has gained a vast, many-sided range of skills and knowledge. Education here goes beyond a technical knowledge of engineering and architecture. Students acquire competence in the interdisciplinary nature of the various fields of the contemporary scientific world, while still aware of the needs of people and society.

CENTRO PER E-LEARNING E MULTIMEDIALITÀ (CeLM) is the department that will work on this project. CeLM is active since 1994 in production of multimedia materials and support of the distance degree courses in Politecnico di Torino and is also specialized in broadcast video production.

Role in EADIS

Within this project CeLM will

  • Work with partners to develop the Digital Innovation Studio environment ;
  • Provide employees to test the DIS and curriculum;
  • Provide access to our networks and partnerships in order to disseminate the findings of the project.

Delft University of Technology, www.tudelft.nl:
Delft University of Technology annually awards degrees to many hundreds of engineers and technologists who go on to excel in science and business working in blue-chip companies such as Bosh and Phillips across the worlds. In line with this history we have developed the course "European Global Product Realization", which is the international variant of the IDP design exercise (ID4040, ontwerpen 6). Organized at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, it is a new, highly innovative course in which virtual academic enterprises will be formed via internet based video-conference meetings and other latest information technologies. Students can develop a holistic design competence that enables future product designers to work efficiently in geographically dislocated collaborative design environments.
This course, scheduled in each Spring semester, focuses on a variety of issues related to designing and manufacturing a "global" product - one that can be marketed successfully in various regions of the world. We are very fortunate to contribute to this course development by sharing the responsibilities in establishing the virtual work environment and elaborating emerging didactical concepts as the Academic Virtual Enterprises and Navigated Learning. Furthermore, our design students and tutors have shown interest in this course. We intend to involve them in evaluating EADIS.

Role in EADIS

As part of our role,we would transfer knowledge and best practice learned from the e-learning initiative European Global Product Realization, described above and will provide access to our networks and partnerships in order to disseminate the findings of the project.
